Languages
Intent:
At Collingwood we aim to provide a curriculum that will inspire children to develop a love of learning about other languages and cultures and understand how languages could be important in their future.
Implementation:
Throughout KS2, French is taught through a progressive scheme (Rigolo 1 and 2) which builds, step by step on children’s previous learning developing knowledge and understanding from Years 3 to 6. We encourage children to be able to apply previous knowledge to new scenarios and to be able to answer questions and express themselves in other languages verbally and through written work by year 5/6. We strive to help pupils develop a curiosity and interest in learning other languages and to feel confident when engaging in the four key language skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing. Vocabulary displayed around school helps make the subject “real” for pupils. Although the teaching of languages is not statutory during EYFS and KS1, we think it is important to begin to introduce the idea that different languages are spoken in other countries, therefore younger children will begin to learn greetings , respond in French to the register, count etc in languages which are familiar to our pupils and staff.
How we teach Computing
Our aim is for all children to be efficient users of technologies as tools for learning. Computers including Chromebooks, Ipads and Laptops are used to enhance learning across the curriculum as well as being taught as a discrete subject. Children are taught to code and debug (writing and fixing algorithms for computers) from a young age using programmable beebots, apps and programs like Scratch and Scratch Jnr. which can be accessed at home. In this ever changing world, we are constantly changing how we teach children to use the internet safely and responsibly exploring issues through discussion and with the help and support of professionals and experts who we invite into school. Support and advice for parents on “e-safety” can be found in the "Where to look for help" section on this website.
Information about your child's learning in computing this term can be found in their "Supporting Learning Book" which should be kept in their book bag or on their class page on www.collingwoodschool.net
