At Collingwood, we recognise that physical activity and sports are an essential part of a child’s everyday life and a key factor in the future wellbeing. We aim for all children to find enjoyment in physical activity and aim to provide them with a wide range of opportunities to discover the right activities for themselves and understand the benefits of physical activity. Our goal is present opportunities for competitive sports against themselves and others, working in partnerships and teams, which helps to build self-confidence, perseverance and a sense of pride. A key part of this will be to engage their enthusiasm and provide them with the necessary skills and experiences in order for them to be in the best position possible to further engage in physical activity and sporting opportunities as their educational and life journey continues beyond this establishment. Our aim is to prepare and support pupils towards healthy and active lifestyle choices for their future mental and physical well-being.
Develop PE skills that enables pupils to become physically confident, supporting their health, wellbeing and fitness and provides the foundations for lifelong activity. Especially for those inactive and overweight children;
We want them to succeed and excel in competitive sport and physical activities. We offer all children chances to compete in sport and other activities. This helps them build character and learn values such as fairness and respect;
Through PE, we develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. They build confidence and competence in a range of activities;
Implementation
A new progressive curriculum has been put into place since April 2024. Lessons are taught using the Get Set 4 Education scheme, where by all lessons are creatively devised to ensure inclusivity and engagement. We employ sports coaches that provide children with different skills and experiences through after school clubs, lessons and lunchtime activities. We take part in intra and inter school competitions which uses the skills from lessons and clubs to apply into game situations, all children are able to take part including festivals such as a teddy bear’s picnic. At the end of each academic year, all children within Collingwood take part in a sports day, using their skills to take part in mini-activities for their team colour.
We teach lessons so that children:
have fun and enjoy PE and being active
learn, practice and secure a range of skills and tactics
experience success and gain self-confidence
develop good sporting attitudes
understand basic rules and keep to them
experience positive competition
learn in a safe environment
have a foundation for life-long physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active
