At Collingwood Primary School, our science curriculum has been designed with the intention of instilling a deeply engraved curiosity into all our pupils about all the wonderful things around them that make up our universe: from the workings of a tiny ant to dwarf plants and Newton stars.
It is our mission to provide the best possible science education that gives children experience of the foundations they need to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We want our children to appreciate how science has changed the world around us and know that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
Lastly, our Science curriculum has been developed with the intention of being inclusive to all, so that children from all backgrounds will be able to not only access it, but understand and be inspired by it, regardless of any barriers to learning that they may have. How to engage, motivate and inspire our female learners, so as to encourage more females into STEM professions, was also at the heart of the creation of our Science curriculum.
Implementation
Our curriculum has been designed with children at the heart of it, as active learners. This encourages our children to become enquiry based learners, collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences.
Our pupils are taught to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave based upon prior knowledge and past experiences, and analyse causes. Scientific principles and enquiries are woven throughout our curriculum: Problem Solving, Pattern Seeking, Fair Testing, Research, Observation Over Time and Identifying, Grouping and Classifying. These ensure that Collingwood pupils are gaining a full breadth of opportunities to engage in learning as scientists.
Information about your child's learning in science this term can be found in their "Supporting Learning Book" which should be kept in their book bag or on their class page.
